The warp drive: hyper-fast travel within general relativity

چکیده

It is shown how, within the framework of general relativity and without the introduction of wormholes, it is possible to modify a spacetime in a way that allows a spaceship to travel with an arbitrarily large speed. By a purely local expansion of spacetime behind the spaceship and an opposite contraction in front of it, motion faster than the speed of light as seen by observers outside the disturbed region is possible. The resulting distortion is reminiscent of the “warp drive” of science fiction. However, just as it happens with wormholes, exotic matter will be needed in order to generate a distortion of spacetime like the one discussed here. Published in: Class. Quantum Grav. 11-5, L73-L77 (1994). ∗Present address: Max Planck Institut für Gravitationsphysik, Albert Einstein Institut, Schlaatzweg 1, D-14473 Potsdam, Germany.

Speed Limits in General Relativity

Some standard results on the initial value problem of general relativity in matter are reviewed. These results are applied first to show that in a well defined sense, finite perturbations in the gravitational field travel no faster than light, and second to show that it is impossible to construct a warp drive as considered by Alcubierre (1994) in the absence of exotic matter.

With Zero Expansion

It is commonly believed that Alcubierre’s warp drive works by contracting space in front of the warp bubble and expanding space behind it. We show that this contraction/expansion is but a marginal consequence of the choice made by Alcubierre, and explicitly construct a similar spacetime where no contraction/expansion occurs. Global and optical properties of warp drive spacetimes are also discus...

Warp drive and causality.

Alcubierre recently exhibited a spacetime which, within the framework of general relativity, allows travel at superluminal speeds if matter with a negative energy density can exist, and conjectured that it should be possible to use similar techniques to construct a theory containing closed causal loops and, thus, travel backwards in time. We verify this conjecture by exhibiting a simple modific...

Linearized warp drive and the energy conditions

“Warp drive” spacetimes are useful as “gedanken-experiments” and as a theoretician’s probe of the foundations of general relativity. Applying linearized gravity to the weak-field warp drive, i.e., for non-relativistic warp-bubble velocities, we find that the occurrence of energy condition violations in this class of spacetimes is generic to the form of the geometry under consideration and is no...
